Colombian President Gustavo Petro has pointed to the country's Caribbean region as a potential Bitcoin mining destination, noting that Venezuela and Paraguay are already attracting mining investment on the back of abundant clean energy resources. Petro framed the opportunity in regional terms, positioning Colombia as a natural next step in Latin America's growing mining footprint.
Petro attached clear conditions to the vision: mining powered by fossil fuels, he warned, risks accelerating global warming and should be avoided. He also called for direct dialogue with the Wayúu indigenous community, proposing they become co-owners of any projects developed on their territory — a model that could set a precedent for community-inclusive mining elsewhere in the region.
