Anthropic's Claude Fable 5 raises DeFi vulnerability fears!

Anthropic has launched Claude Fable 5, its first publicly available Mythos-class AI model, and the release is already drawing scrutiny from the DeFi and smart contract security community. To manage the risks that come with frontier-level capability, Fable 5 ships with an automatic safety-routing mechanism: queries touching cyberattacks, biological or chemical threats, or model distillation are silently redirected to the less capable Claude Opus 4.8 — the same model that previously helped uncover a critical vulnerability in Zcash's Orchard protocol.

Why it matters

The Zcash precedent is the detail that sharpens the concern. If a constrained predecessor model was already capable of surfacing a critical flaw in a production privacy-coin protocol, a Mythos-class model — even safety-routed — represents a step-change in the speed and scale at which vulnerabilities in smart contracts, DeFi yield protocols, and privacy coins can be discovered. That dynamic cuts both ways: AI-powered auditing firms stand to benefit significantly, while unaudited or under-audited codebases face a materially higher threat surface.

Market impact

The near-term read is bearish for protocols that have not undergone rigorous third-party audits, particularly in the privacy-coin and DeFi yield sectors. Projects like Zcash, which already had a known brush with AI-assisted vulnerability discovery, may face renewed scrutiny.
