DogeOS has launched a public testnet for a zero-knowledge rollup designed to bring EVM-compatible smart contracts to Dogecoin. DOGE will pay transaction fees, while applications including trading, lending, stablecoins, prediction markets and games can be built on the network and settle state to Dogecoin.
Why it matters
The testnet gives developers a live environment to build and test applications aimed at expanding Dogecoin beyond payments and its historical reliance on Elon Musk. DogeOS comes from the team behind the MyDoge wallet, and its $6.9 million funding round, led by Polychain Capital, was announced in May 2025.
The security model is not yet native to Dogecoin. DogeOS currently uses a trusted execution environment, validators and a permissioned sequencer. Bridge state transitions require valid proofs, signatures from a majority of validators and a TEE signer. Dogecoin itself does not verify the ZK proofs, CEO Jordan Jefferson told The Block.
Market impact
A proposed Dogecoin Core upgrade submitted by the team in July would allow Dogecoin miners to verify DogeOS execution proofs directly, but it has not been implemented. That leaves the testnet running without native proof verification by Dogecoin miners.
Jefferson said the team will share a mainnet timeline as it reaches development milestones. Dogecoin traded around $0.094 at publication time, down 60% over the past year. The testnet creates a place to assess developer interest and application development, while a mainnet schedule and the proposed Core upgrade remain unresolved.
Frequently asked questions
-
What does the DogeOS testnet bring to Dogecoin?
It provides a public environment for testing an EVM-compatible application layer designed to support smart contracts and applications that settle state to Dogecoin.
-
Which applications is DogeOS designed to support?
The project lists trading, lending, stablecoins, prediction markets and games as potential application types.
-
Does Dogecoin currently verify DogeOS zero-knowledge proofs?
No. Dogecoin does not currently verify the proofs itself. DogeOS uses a trusted execution environment, validators and a permissioned sequencer.
-
What is required for DogeOS bridge state transitions?
They require valid proofs, signatures from a majority of the validator set and a TEE signer.
-
What would the proposed Dogecoin Core upgrade change?
The proposed upgrade would allow Dogecoin miners to verify DogeOS execution proofs directly, but it has not been implemented.
