IBIT Drives 115% of US Bitcoin ETF Net Inflows

GBTC alone is responsible for $27.65B of rival exits, and the rest of the field still trails IBIT by more than 3x.

BlackRock's IBIT has absorbed $63.94 billion in cumulative net inflows since the US spot Bitcoin ETF category launched in January 2024, while every rival fund combined has shed $8.43 billion over the same window. The arithmetic gives IBIT 115.2% of the category's net inflow: the fund supplied every dollar the group retained, then offset $8.4 billion of net redemptions elsewhere. On Aug. 27 alone the dynamic showed up at the daily level, with IBIT pulling in $277.6 million while the rest of the field bled $35.3 million, leaving the category with a still-positive $242.3 million.

Why it matters

Most of the negative column belongs to Grayscale's GBTC, which has recorded $27.65 billion in cumulative net outflows since conversion as shareholders rotated into cheaper wrappers. Strip GBTC out and the picture still tilts to BlackRock: every other fund combined has taken in $19.23 billion, while IBIT alone has collected more than triple that. Across the 14 trading sessions from Aug. 17 through Sept. 3, IBIT captured $2.84 billion of the group's $3.66 billion, or 77.8% of category flow.

The pattern points to a structural split inside Bitcoin. Ownership of the network asset stays distributed, but the main US financial entrance narrows to a single revolving door. Financial advisers can drop IBIT into model portfolios, retirement plans gain exposure without learning wallet security, and BlackRock's name does much of the explaining that smaller issuers have to do for themselves. Heavy daily liquidity then attracts larger orders, which attract more liquidity, in a self-reinforcing loop the rival funds cannot easily replicate.

Market impact

IBIT is not a central bank. It expands only when authorized participants create new shares against fresh investor demand and contracts symmetrically when those investors redeem. Sept. 1 showed the reverse in one entry, as IBIT shed $201.2 million and Fidelity lost $43.7 million, dragging the group to a $236.5 million outflow. Two sessions later IBIT brought in $115.4 million, then added another $454 million on Sept. 3 against a $730.8 million group total.

With roughly $63.44 billion in net assets, 1.375 billion shares outstanding, a 0.25% sponsor fee and a 0.02% 30-day median bid-ask spread as of Sept. 3, IBIT has become the marginal US bid for Bitcoin. Days when it offsets redemptions elsewhere signal the informal backstop is active; days when it joins the outflow show how quickly the same structure can amplify downside.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Why does IBIT have more than 100% of US spot Bitcoin ETF net inflows?

Because every fund outside IBIT has recorded net outflows since January 2024. IBIT took in $63.94B while the rest of the category combined for -$8.43B, so the fund supplied every dollar the group retained and then offset the exits elsewhere.

  2. How much of the rival outflows come from GBTC specifically?

Grayscale's GBTC accounts for $27.65B of the combined rival outflow figure. After stripping out GBTC, the rest of the field still netted +$19.23B, but IBIT alone still collected more than triple that sum.

  3. Can IBIT act as a permanent buyer of last resort for Bitcoin?

No. IBIT expands only when authorized participants create new shares against fresh investor demand and contracts when those investors redeem. The backstop framing holds only as long as the buying crowd keeps adding.

  4. What happened on Sept. 1 that showed the limits of IBIT's dominance?

IBIT shed $201.2M that day and Fidelity lost another $43.7M, dragging the group to a $236.5M outflow. Two sessions later IBIT was back to adding $454M against a $730.8M group total.

  5. What is IBIT's current scale and fee structure?

As of Sept. 3, BlackRock reported roughly $63.44B in IBIT net assets, 1.375B shares outstanding, a 0.25% sponsor fee, and a 0.02% 30-day median bid-ask spread. The portfolio holds only Bitcoin.
