IBM announced a beta connection between its Digital Asset Haven platform and SWIFT’s shared ledger for tokenized deposits on Sept. 24. An ISO 20022 Messaging Adapter lets participating institutions instruct ledger transactions through standard payment messages. The move adds a new route into SWIFT’s existing program, where 17 banks are preparing to pilot live tokenized-deposit transactions in a controlled rollout.
Why it matters
Banks can test transfers using payment formats and compliance processes they already know, while Haven supplies wallets, key management, transaction signing and policy controls. IBM says institutions already participating in the SWIFT program have tested tokenized deposits on the ledger with Haven. The platform also connects to Hyperledger Besu.
A separate on-premises beta lets institutions run Haven in their own data centers on IBM Z and LinuxONE, without a public-cloud dependency. IBM says both the solution and key-management layers remain in the client’s environment. The deployment uses the same architecture, APIs and workflows as Haven’s SaaS and hybrid versions, giving banks a choice over infrastructure as they evaluate the SWIFT connection.
Market impact
The ledger supports around-the-clock movement of digital assets, according to IBM, but a transfer does not replace final settlement. Existing mechanisms, including real-time gross settlement systems, still complete that step. The distinction matters to banks assessing how tokenized deposits might fit into continuous payment services.
The two betas address separate adoption questions: whether ISO 20022 messages fit banks’ payment processes, and where institutions want custody and transaction-management infrastructure to run. Neither announcement means final settlement has moved onto the shared ledger.
Frequently asked questions
-
How does IBM’s adapter connect banks to SWIFT’s shared ledger?
The ISO 20022 Messaging Adapter maps standard payment instructions to transactions on SWIFT’s permissioned ledger, allowing institutions to use familiar message formats.
-
What role does Digital Asset Haven play in the beta?
Haven provides wallets, key management, transaction signing and policy controls, and connects to Hyperledger Besu.
-
What does the on-premises beta let banks control?
Banks can run Haven in their own data centers on IBM Z and LinuxONE, keeping the solution and key-management layers within their environment.
-
Does moving tokenized deposits on the ledger complete final settlement?
No. Existing mechanisms, including real-time gross settlement systems, still complete final settlement after a ledger transfer.
-
How does IBM’s announcement relate to SWIFT’s bank pilot?
SWIFT’s program has 17 banks preparing controlled live tokenized-deposit pilots. IBM’s beta adds Haven as a route into that effort.
