RLUSD collateral and weekend access extend institutional trading beyond market hours, but HSBC says thin liquidity may initially limit large positions.

Ripple Prime now lets institutional clients trade swaps tied to more than 100 stock, commodity and currency markets around the clock, using Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin as collateral. The contracts track perpetual futures listed by Trade.xyz on Hyperliquid, allowing positions when conventional markets are closed. Ripple says trading firm Virtu is already using the service.

Why it matters

The launch extends institutional access to round-the-clock market exposure through a brokerage business that manages client collateral and risk across positions. A swap tracks an asset’s price without requiring the client to own the underlying stock or commodity. Ripple Prime, formerly Hidden Road, connected its brokerage to Hyperliquid in February, and the new swaps are offered under its British Virgin Islands license, with more jurisdictions planned.

HSBC’s Daragh Maher called the product “evolutionary, not revolutionary.” He said the market remains small relative to the traditional markets it tracks, and argued that meaningful adoption depends on enough depth for investors to take positions and adjust risk while conventional markets are closed. HSBC expects early activity to skew toward market makers, proprietary traders and hedge funds pursuing basis trades rather than institutions seeking strategic hedges.

Market impact

Weekend trading has already exposed the risks of limited liquidity and stale reference prices. Nearly $52 million in leveraged chip-stock positions were liquidated within 10 minutes as selling spread from Binance to Hyperliquid, while the underlying shares were not trading. Without fresh stock-market prices, the contracts faced added difficulty tracking their reference assets.

Ripple’s opportunity will depend on whether the service offers lower costs, simpler execution or more efficient use of collateral than existing brokers and venues. Ripple has named an early customer but has not disclosed trading volumes, leaving liquidity and adoption as key measures of whether the offering can move beyond an initial niche.
