Stablecoin Payments Jump 45% as Visa and Stripe Add Rails

Stablecoins are moving more value without much new issuance as major payment networks fold USDC and other digital dollars into existing rails.

Stablecoin payments reached $482 billion through September 2026, up 45% from a year earlier, even as total stablecoin supply rose just 0.4% to about $305 billion. Payment counts grew 71% to more than 1 billion, indicating that the digital dollars already in circulation are changing hands more often.

Why it matters

The growth is arriving as Mastercard, Stripe and Visa connect stablecoins to familiar payment infrastructure. Mastercard launched its Global Money Platform with BVNK, combining fiat accounts, stablecoin balances, conversions, card spending and bank payouts through one connection. Nuvei and Marqeta are among its first customers.

Stripe is expanding stablecoin-linked card infrastructure across more than 30 countries, with plans to reach over 100 next year. Visa said Inyo Global became the first provider to use Visa Direct's stablecoin prefunding service commercially, including Circle's USDC.

The direction is clear: businesses want to move between fiat and stablecoins inside existing payment and treasury systems rather than maintain separate crypto operations.

Market impact

Stablecoin-linked cards are growing quickly. Allium measured $3.9 billion in spending through September, ten times the year-earlier amount, with purchases under $50 accounting for 84% of the increase in card transactions.

The market remains small relative to traditional payments. Allium classified only $2.4 trillion, or 2.5%, of $97.9 trillion in raw stablecoin transfers as end-user activity. Stablecoin card spending represented just 0.03% of Visa's $4 trillion quarterly payment volume, leaving substantial room for adoption if the new integrations gain traction.
