Sky.money reported more than $4.4 billion of stablecoin liquidity in its Peg Stability Module on Oct. 9. The PSM lets holders convert USDS, Sky Protocol's dollar-linked token, into USDC and back at a one-for-one rate through liquidity already held by the protocol. Sky also reported about $1.6 billion in cumulative USDC-USDS volume processed through Uniswap routing by Oct. 6.
Why it matters
The figures describe conversion capacity and turnover, not a direct measure of new dollars entering crypto. A swap through existing inventory moves liquidity between holders or token forms, while borrowing against collateral can create spendable stablecoin liquidity without a matching bank-dollar deposit. Upgrading an existing token can increase the count of a new contract without increasing the underlying economic position.
The same distinction applies to Sky's DAI-USDS converter and USDD's borrowing and migration routes. A DAI or USDS conversion changes the denomination of an existing position. USDD vault issuance creates debt-backed spending liquidity, while USDDOLD migration exchanges an existing holding for an equivalent amount of new USDD.
Market impact
For a holder seeking USDC, the immediate constraint is the USDC inventory available through the chosen route at the time of the transaction. The aggregate $4.4 billion liquidity figure cannot automatically be treated as available USDC, and collateral valuations cannot substitute for redemption inventory. Routed trades may also incur pool fees, pricing impact and network costs even when the direct PSM leg has no protocol fee or slippage.
Receiving USDC is still separate from receiving bank dollars. Circle's issuance and redemption process connects eligible users to fiat accounts, while a protocol conversion completes only the token-conversion stage. Cashing out USDS therefore requires both a liquid conversion route and access to an issuer or banking route that can deliver dollars.
Frequently asked questions
-
What does Sky's $4.4 billion liquidity figure represent?
It represents aggregate stablecoin liquidity disclosed in Sky's Peg Stability Module on Oct. 9. It does not mean that $4.4 billion of USDC is available for every USDS exit.
-
How does the USDS-USDC Peg Stability Module work?
The PSM provides a direct route between USDS and USDC at a one-for-one rate using liquidity already held by the protocol. The direct leg had no protocol swap fee or slippage at the settings described.
-
Why does USDS liquidity not equal new bank-dollar demand?
A conversion through existing inventory moves liquidity between token forms or holders. It does not by itself establish new issuance or show that fresh dollars entered the crypto system.
-
What did Sky's $1.6 billion Uniswap volume measure?
It measured cumulative USDC-USDS volume processed through Uniswap routing by Oct. 6. Because it can include both directions and repeated conversions, it does not measure net USDS issuance or new dollar deposits.
-
Why does a USDS cash-out need a separate bank route?
The PSM can convert USDS into USDC, but receiving bank dollars is a separate step. The holder still needs an eligible issuer or banking route that can redeem or transfer the USDC into fiat.
