XRP Custody: BNY Adds Support for Institutions

BNY’s custody service reduces operational friction for institutions, but funded client balances and new acquisitions are still needed to show incremental XRP demand.

BNY now supports custody of XRP and Ripple’s RLUSD stablecoin for eligible institutional clients, according to an Oct. 27 announcement. The service connects custody with settlement, accounting and servicing, while C2FO plans a separate RLUSD settlement rollout on the XRP Ledger in the US. Neither initiative discloses a funded XRP custody balance or a new purchase.

Why it matters

BNY’s platform gives institutions a banking route to safeguard and transfer XRP, using features such as segregated wallets, operational controls and combined digital and traditional asset servicing. That can reduce reconciliation and administration work after an institution decides to hold the asset.

Custody availability is not the same as new demand. An institution could move existing XRP from another custodian to BNY, changing the safekeeping arrangement without buying additional coins. BNY also does not identify XRP custody clients, balances or jurisdictions, and its service availability varies by customer and location.

Market impact

The clearest signal would be funded XRP custody accounts paired with evidence that clients acquired additional XRP. A higher dollar value of assets in custody would not be enough on its own because token prices can rise without increasing balances. BNY’s role as a custodian also does not make it an XRP buyer for its own balance sheet.

C2FO’s separate plan uses RLUSD for settlement through a limited rollout of Instant Pay. Businesses can join a waitlist, access is initially limited to the US, and actual uptake and settlement volumes remain the key metrics to watch. The plan does not establish that invoice principal will be held in XRP or that it will require significant XRP liquidity. XRPL’s documented minimum transaction fee is 10 drops, with a 1 XRP base reserve and generally 0.2 XRP for each qualifying owned ledger item, but those requirements do not scale directly with invoice value.

Frequently asked questions

  1. Does BNY’s XRP custody support prove new XRP buying?

No. Clients could transfer existing XRP from another custodian, so custody support alone does not establish incremental demand or a new purchase.

  2. What would provide stronger evidence of institutional XRP demand?

Funded XRP custody balances combined with evidence that clients acquired additional XRP would provide a clearer demand signal than custody availability or valuation alone.

  3. What role does BNY have in Ripple’s RLUSD ecosystem?

BNY provides custody for eligible institutional clients and was previously selected as RLUSD’s primary reserve custodian for reserve assets and cash supporting the stablecoin.

  4. How will C2FO use RLUSD on the XRP Ledger?

C2FO plans to use RLUSD for settlement supporting its Instant Pay working-capital service through a limited rollout on the XRP Ledger.

  5. What are the initial limits on C2FO’s settlement rollout?

Businesses can join a waitlist, access will expand through a limited rollout over the coming months, and the offering will be available only in the US at launch.
