Zcash developers released Zakura Common, an open-source cryptography toolkit that cuts the time a wallet spends generating a private transaction from more than three seconds to under 200 milliseconds. The team behind Zakura, the standalone Zcash node launched in July, said the new stack makes proof generation more than 14 times faster on mobile devices and more than five times faster on desktops. Hashing is more than 21 times faster, and node-side transaction checks land between four and eight times faster. The toolkit requires no Zcash network upgrade and slots into wallets as the chain exists today.
Why it matters
Shielded Zcash transactions hide the sender, receiver and amount, but the cryptography that proves the transaction is still valid runs locally on the user's device before anything hits the network. That pre-flight step is the main reason shielded payments have felt sluggish, and it has capped real-world wallet software at roughly one shielded transaction per second per device. Cutting that compute from seconds to a fraction of a second removes the wallet-side bottleneck, not just the chain-side one, which is the path Zcash needs to clear before privacy is fast enough for retail checkout.
The work is led by Sean Bowe, a Zcash cofounder and longtime zero-knowledge researcher working with Dev Ojha. Zakura's broader mission is to scale shielded throughput past 50,000 private transactions per second, roughly Visa-class volume. Zakura Common is the layer that gets the user's own device out of the way.
Market impact
Wallet developers can adopt the open-source libraries immediately. Zakura's own node already runs on the new stack in version 1.3.0, and Vizor Wallet is among the first wallets to integrate it. The team says the libraries already handle the 25-second block times proposed for Zcash's next major upgrade, NU7, and Project Tachyon has also moved over. ZEC climbed roughly 5% to near $839 on the release before pulling back with the broader market.
