The United States, United Kingdom, and Australia — the three AUKUS partners — have announced plans to jointly develop underwater drone systems designed to protect critical undersea cable infrastructure and expand military capabilities beneath the surface.
Undersea cables carry an estimated 95% of international internet and financial data traffic, making them a high-value target in any modern conflict or state-sponsored sabotage campaign. Recent incidents in the Baltic and elsewhere have put cable security firmly on the agenda of Western defense planners.
The AUKUS technology pillar, which runs alongside the headline nuclear submarine program, has increasingly focused on autonomous systems and AI-enabled hardware. Underwater drones fit squarely into that lane — offering persistent surveillance and rapid response without putting personnel at risk.
