Coinbase-incubated Base has rolled out a Model Context Protocol (MCP) gateway, giving AI interfaces like Anthropic's Claude and OpenAI's ChatGPT a standardised on-ramp to interact with the Base blockchain. MCP is an emerging open protocol that lets AI agents read and write to external systems — in this case, an EVM-compatible Layer 2 — without custom per-integration engineering.
The move positions Base as an early infrastructure layer for agentic crypto workflows: AI assistants that can query on-chain state, initiate transactions, or surface DeFi data directly inside a chat interface. For Coinbase, whose consumer and developer ecosystem already sits on Base, the integration extends the network's reach into the fastest-growing distribution channel in software.
