CertiK estimates that victims have lost approximately $101 million to crypto wrench attacks in just the first four months of 2026 — a pace that projects to several hundred million dollars and roughly 130 incidents for the full year. The security firm recorded 34 verified incidents globally so far this year, a 41% increase over the same period in 2025, which was itself the most active year on record with approximately 70 reported assaults.
The threat is increasingly concentrated in Europe, which accounts for 28 of 34 incidents (82%) in 2026. France leads all countries with 24 assaults already recorded this year, surpassing the 20 logged throughout all of 2025.
