The Depository Trust Company launched DTCC’s Tokenization Service on Oct. 28, with 20 Participants signed up and 34 securities eligible at launch. Conversion orders can be submitted on business days from 2 a.m. to 6 p.m. Eastern time, with completion targeted within 15 minutes. Once tokenized, securities can move between registered wallets on the same blockchain 24/7.
Why it matters
The service brings tokenized versions of securities held at DTC into an institutional framework. The tokens represent entitlements to the underlying securities, including their legal rights, economic interests and protections, while DTC remains the official recordkeeper. Participation is voluntary and limited to eligible DTC Participants, and receiving wallets must be registered.
That distinction shapes the practical use case. A firm planning a weekend transfer that requires conversion must prepare its token inventory during the preceding business-day window. The launch connections are Canton Network and DTCC’s private Besu network.
Market impact
Continuous token transfers do not mean continuous stock trading. A transfer also does not by itself establish that a recipient will accept the token as collateral or that a related cash payment has settled. Treasury distributions and maturity payments remain in fiat, sent to Participants’ traditional accounts.
DTCC lists settlement and collateral enhancements, including on-chain netting and digital cash, as an indicative roadmap for 2027 and beyond. For now, a weekend transfer depends on eligible securities already being tokenized, registered wallets on the same blockchain, an accepting recipient and separate payment arrangements.
