EnsembleTX, Hong Kong’s tokenization pilot, now supports 24/7 interbank settlement of tokenized deposit transactions in tokenized central bank money. The controlled pilot includes 12 banks and 20 industry pioneers, with access limited to participating institutions.

Why it matters

The upgrade extends the cash-settlement window for activity already taking place in the pilot, including corporate treasury management and tokenized money market fund transactions. Commercial banks provide tokenized deposits to participating firms; tokenized central bank money serves as the settlement asset between banks.

HKMA named Ant International, BlackRock and China Asset Management (Hong Kong) among industry participants. Banks cited as providing tokenized deposits include Bank of China (Hong Kong), China Construction Bank (Asia), ICBC (Asia), Standard Chartered Bank (Hong Kong) and HSBC. These are examples, not the full roster.

Securities and Futures Commission Chief Executive Julia Leung said the capability supports round-the-clock corporate treasury transactions and secondary trading of tokenized funds on licensed platforms. Actual availability still depends on each fund’s bank and platform arrangements: 24/7 interbank settlement does not mean every fund trades continuously.

Market impact

EnsembleTX launched in November 2025 as a controlled environment for real-value transactions involving tokenized deposits and digital assets, initially using Hong Kong’s dollar Real Time Gross Settlement system. The latest change adds the previously envisaged round-the-clock settlement in tokenized central bank money to that infrastructure.

The expanded settlement capability is available within the pilot, not as an unrestricted market-wide service. HKMA also reported completed trial trades in tokenized Exchange Fund Bills and said trials would soon expand to regulated stablecoins. That stablecoin work is a separate next step, not part of the settlement upgrade already enabled.

Frequently asked questions

  1. What does the EnsembleTX upgrade enable?

It enables participating banks to settle tokenized deposit transactions around the clock in tokenized central bank money.

  2. How many institutions are involved in the controlled pilot?

The pilot includes 12 banks and 20 industry pioneers. Access depends on participating institutions.

  3. How do tokenized deposits differ from tokenized central bank money?

Commercial banks provide tokenized deposits to participating firms. Tokenized central bank money is used to settle transactions between banks.

  4. Does 24/7 settlement mean every tokenized fund trades continuously?

No. Availability for an individual fund depends on its bank and platform arrangements, and continuous interbank settlement does not establish continuous trading.

  5. Are regulated stablecoins part of the new settlement capability?

No. Trials involving regulated stablecoins are a separate forthcoming step. The 24/7 settlement upgrade is already available within the pilot.
