Hyperliquid's HYPE token and derivatives platform have overtaken Ethereum in daily trading volume on certain days, driven by institutional capital rotating away from range-bound BTC and ETH, according to Joshua Lim, global head of markets at FalconX. "HYPE is probably on some days more active than Ethereum for us," Lim said, adding that liquidity in HYPE is now deep enough that hedge funds can move size without friction.

Why it matters

With bitcoin and ether implied volatility near all-time lows — a signal that options markets expect little directional movement — speculative and institutional capital is hunting yield and volatility elsewhere. Hyperliquid is capturing that rotation not just through HYPE but through its derivatives suite, which offers early access to markets unavailable on traditional venues: pre-IPO perpetuals tied to companies like SpaceX, tokenized stocks, and commodities. Lim noted that for some hedge funds, Hyperliquid is the only liquid way to access these instruments. The platform generated roughly $800 million in revenue in 2025, and Grayscale has argued its long-term significance may be less about HYPE itself and more about its potential as a 24/7 venue for a broad range of financial assets.

Market impact

The rotation Lim describes is visible across altcoins: HYPE, Zcash (ZEC), Venice (VVV), and AI-linked tokens are all attracting speculative flows as BTC and ETH sit in tight ranges amid macro uncertainty and ETF outflows. Regulatory risk remains a live variable — Hyperliquid currently restricts U.S. users — but the platform is increasingly viewed as a test case for whether crypto-native infrastructure can compete with traditional exchanges at scale.
