Mastercard Launches Stablecoin Security for Safer Payments

The risk intelligence service checks fraud, sanctions and scam exposure before funds move onchain, landing as banks race to adopt stablecoin rails without inheriting their compliance headaches.

Mastercard has introduced Stablecoin Security, a risk intelligence service that lets financial institutions assess stablecoin payments for fraud, scams, sanctions violations and other financial crime risks before funds move onchain. Unveiled at Money20/20 USA, the service is live first in North America, with commercial availability expected worldwide in 2027. Borderless.xyz and Keyrails are the first announced partners, and both access Mastercard's risk scoring through an API designed to plug into banks' existing fraud and compliance stacks.

The service examines where money came from and studies the transaction context before assigning a risk score across the stablecoin payment lifecycle. Mastercard pointed to a BIS study of 593 million stablecoin transfer events across 141 million Ethereum transactions in 2025, which found nearly 60% of transfer events occurred within complex, multi-step transactions rather than simple one-to-one payments. That complexity is precisely the blind spot the screening layer targets.

Why it matters

The launch is the compliance plumbing institutional stablecoin adoption has been missing. "Stablecoins are creating new possibilities for value exchange, but financial institutions need the right intelligence and controls to participate with confidence," said Ann Johnson, Mastercard's executive vice president of Security Solutions. When one of the world's largest payment networks builds pre-transaction screening into its rails, the practical barriers that kept regulated banks off stablecoin settlement shrink considerably.

It also extends a rapid build-out. Mastercard acquired stablecoin infrastructure provider BVNK in a deal worth up to $1.8 billion, launched a Crypto Credential pilot with Borderless.xyz for cross-border payments, and last week rolled out its Global Money Platform combining fiat and stablecoin accounts, real-time conversion and card spending through a single API. BVNK is expected to join Stablecoin Security's plans next year.
