Mastercard Opens Agent Pay APIs to Developers

The pilot links AI agents to card, bank, fiat and stablecoin rails, while developers test whether autonomous software can reliably buy digital services.

Mastercard is opening early access to Agent Pay for Machines after end-to-end pilots with Cloudflare, Ant International, BVNK, AIsa, Base and Coinbase. Developers can now test the APIs and submit feedback, although the system remains in pilot and is not commercially available.

At a Cloudflare Connect demonstration, marketing agency Hype gave an AI agent a budget to prepare a protein bar campaign. The agent bought social media research from AIsa and eight campaign images through Cloudflare AI Gateway, completing nine payments while staying within the approved limit.

Why it matters

The pilot addresses a missing layer in the AI services economy: software can communicate through the web and use APIs, but autonomous agents also need a way to pay for those services. Mastercard's system supports card, bank account and stablecoin payments, giving developers multiple settlement options.

Coinbase Developer Platform supplied the wallet infrastructure for the Hype test, while Base handled onchain settlement. The agent used Coinbase's x402 protocol, which lets a website or API return an HTTP 402 payment request and verify a signed payment voucher before releasing a service.

Market impact

The model could make small, automated purchases easier to process across digital services. Mastercard said payment vouchers can be batched and redeemed later instead of settling every transaction individually, while merchants can receive funds in their preferred currency, token or payment rail.

BVNK, acquired by Mastercard in August, served as the agent wallet and used Mastercard's Global Money Platform for fiat and stablecoin processing. The next test is whether developers can turn the pilot's nine-payment demonstration into a reliable, commercially deployable payments layer for autonomous software.

Frequently asked questions

  1. What is Mastercard's Agent Pay for Machines?

It is a Mastercard platform that lets AI agents make payments for digital services using card, bank account and stablecoin rails. Developers can currently access and test its APIs.

  2. What did the Hype pilot demonstrate?

An AI agent bought social media research from AIsa and eight campaign images through Cloudflare AI Gateway. It completed nine payments within a budget approved by Hype.

  3. How does Coinbase's x402 protocol work in the pilot?

A merchant returns an HTTP 402 payment request, and the agent provides a signed payment voucher. The merchant verifies the voucher before delivering the requested service.

  4. What roles did Coinbase and Base play?

Coinbase Developer Platform supplied the wallet infrastructure used to fund the agent. Base served as the onchain settlement network.

  5. Is Mastercard's AI agent payment system commercially available?

No. Mastercard has opened early access for developers to test the APIs and provide feedback, but Agent Pay for Machines remains in the pilot stage.
