Solana's Alpenglow consensus overhaul goes live on test cluster — mainnet could follow next quarter!

Anza, the core Solana development team, has launched Alpenglow on a community test cluster, marking the most significant milestone yet for the network's biggest-ever consensus redesign. Validator operators can now run software that transitions nodes away from Solana's existing Proof-of-History and TowerBFT stack toward a new architecture built for dramatically faster finality and improved network responsiveness.

The successful test deployment confirms that validators can execute what developers are calling an "Alpenswitch" — a live transition from the current consensus mechanism to Alpenglow without breaking the network. That's a non-trivial engineering proof point, and it clears a major prerequisite for mainnet consideration.
