Palo Alto-based blockchain startup Story Protocol is rebranding as DATA Foundation and abandoning its general intellectual-property thesis to build blockchain-based infrastructure for verifying AI training data. Founder Avi Patel, who is joining the new entity from acquisition target Kled AI as chief data officer, said the pivot is a direct response to mounting copyright lawsuits against AI developers and Big Tech.
The relaunch comes with two products: the DATA Network, an onchain registry for dataset origins, licensing and consent terms, and Trace, a public audit and search platform that issues cryptographic receipts for individual data contributions without exposing the underlying files. A launch integration with Kled AI registers 1.1 billion user-contributed records on the network on day one, and Andrea Muttoni is stepping in as CEO of the foundation.
Why it matters
The bet is that AI labs will eventually refuse to license data they cannot verify, turning provenance from a legal nicety into procurement infrastructure. Patel framed it bluntly to CoinDesk: "Labs won't license data they can't verify. Solving that is the whole game." The receipts record content hash, consent terms, licensing, payment proof and timestamps, leaving the asset itself inside the marketplace and accessible only through a licensed transaction. The rebranding also folds in Poseidon, an AI data processing project whose contributor app Numo pays users stablecoins in real time for submitting authenticated data.
The move lands in a tighter fundraising environment, where a crypto startup walking away from a $140 million, a16z-led general IP pitch to chase AI infrastructure is itself a signal about where smart money sees durable demand. Story Protocol's earlier token unlock delay had also drawn scrutiny, making the pivot a chance to reset both narrative and product.
