x402 Protocol Records 138M AI Agent Crypto Payments

Sub-cent transactions put stablecoins in focus for machine-to-machine commerce, but payment counts alone do not prove durable commercial demand.

AI agents made more than 138 million transactions through Coinbase’s x402 protocol, paying for data, computing power and AI services with crypto. Chainalysis found that U.S.-linked wallets accounted for 88.1% of geographically identified payments for AI model inference, while Chinese-linked wallets accounted for 0.1%. More than 87% of analyzed x402 payments were worth 10 cents or less.

Why it matters

The figures point to a use case for crypto payments that traditional card networks can struggle to serve economically: tiny, automated purchases made without human intervention. Stablecoins can move amounts smaller than a cent, enabling software agents to pay for digital services as needed. Coinbase has also begun allowing business customers to accept payments from AI agents, while Visa, Mastercard and Stripe have backed x402.

The activity is not proof of broad commercial adoption. In July, x402 processed roughly 75 million payments worth $24 million over 30 days, and transaction counts alone cannot show how much activity reflects genuine demand. Chainalysis also found that wallets first funded in Q2 2026 were more likely to receive additional funding within 30 days than those first funded in Q3 2025: 89.3% versus 70.6%. The average time from receiving funds to making a first x402 payment fell from 73 days in late 2025 to 18 minutes in Q3 2026.

Market impact

The geographic split varied by service. Chinese-linked wallets accounted for roughly 90% of geographically identified payments for security and code-analysis services, much of it directed to AgentLisa, an AI-powered smart contract auditing platform. Chainalysis cautioned that this pattern does not establish that open-weight models are suppressing Asia’s paid inference market.

For crypto payments, the signal to watch is whether small agent payments translate into sustained, economically meaningful use. The current data show growing activity through x402, but do not measure the entire global market for AI payments.

Frequently asked questions

  1. What services did AI agents pay for through x402?

Agents used crypto to pay for data, computing power, AI model inference and other digital services.

  2. What share of identified AI model inference payments came from U.S.-linked wallets?

U.S.-linked wallets accounted for 88.1% of geographically identified AI model inference payments, compared with 0.1% for Chinese-linked wallets.

  3. Why are stablecoins suited to AI agent micropayments?

Stablecoins can handle payments smaller than a cent, allowing agents to buy digital services in amounts that traditional card networks may not process economically.

  4. How small were most payments analyzed on x402?

More than 87% of analyzed x402 payments were worth 10 cents or less.

  5. Do the x402 transaction figures prove widespread commercial demand?

No. Transaction counts show activity but do not establish how much reflects genuine commercial demand or measure the full global market for AI payments.
