XRP holders earn Kraken DeFi fees via Flare Firelight deal

The model turns protection premiums into FXRP-backed returns, but undisclosed volumes, shared-loss exposure and 30 to 60-day withdrawals make the yield unproven.

Kraken’s Protected Strategies USDC vault is now enrolled in Firelight’s coverage protocol on Flare, giving XRP-linked collateral providers access to premiums paid for DeFi protection. Announced on Oct. 15, the integration was arranged by Sentora and extends Firelight’s Oct. 6 launch to a product distributed through Kraken’s DeFi Earn service.

Why it matters

The vault’s customers pay coverage fees through their investment yield. Firelight converts those USDC premiums into FXRP, a representation of XRP created through Flare’s FAssets system, and adds the converted value to its shared collateral pool. Providers receive stXRP, whose redemption value reflects their claim on the pool rather than a stream of extra tokens.

That creates a potential recurring revenue channel for XRP holders without requiring Kraken depositors to buy XRP. The opportunity is tied to customer demand for protection against specified smart-contract exploits, oracle failures, governance attacks and economic failures. Ordinary price declines, advertised-yield changes and routine liquidity shortages are excluded.

Market impact

The key test is whether the Kraken vault generates recurring premiums. Firelight has not disclosed its premium volume or the amount of FXRP acquired through the integration. Coverage terms, fees and capacity reset every 30 days, so renewals will show whether depositors continue paying for protection and whether collateral providers remain committed.

The return carries portfolio-wide risk. Firelight’s collateral supports all active covered vaults, meaning a qualifying loss elsewhere can affect Kraken-linked providers. Claims first draw on the First-Loss Buffer, then can trigger proportional slashing of the FXRP backing. Coverage is capped at $100,000 per address per period and subject to overall limits and available capital. Withdrawals currently take 30 to 60 days, with loss exposure continuing during part of that period.

Frequently asked questions

  1. How do XRP holders earn from Kraken’s Protected Strategies vault?

The vault pays Firelight protection premiums through its investment yield. Firelight converts those USDC premiums into FXRP, increasing the shared collateral backing providers’ stXRP positions.

  2. Do Kraken depositors need to buy XRP to use the protected vault?

No. Kraken users enter the USDC vault without buying XRP, while separate collateral providers use XRP-linked capital through FXRP on Flare.

  3. What risks do Firelight collateral providers face?

Providers back all active covered vaults, so a qualifying incident elsewhere in the portfolio can reduce their FXRP claim after the First-Loss Buffer is exhausted. This process is known as slashing.

  4. What events does the Kraken vault’s protection cover?

Coverage includes specified smart-contract exploits, oracle failures, governance attacks and failures in protocols’ economic mechanisms. Ordinary price declines, yield changes and routine liquidity shortages are excluded.

  5. How long does it take to withdraw Firelight collateral?

Withdrawals currently take 30 to 60 days after an unstaking request. Exposure to eligible losses can continue during part of the waiting period, although premium accrual ends when the request is submitted.
