zkSync Proves 99% of Ethereum Blocks in Under 10 Seconds

The rival strategies put Ethereum’s December 2029 quantum-resistance target against Starknet’s 2027 goal, while zkSync pairs prover development with a push into regulated finance.

zkSync says its Airbender Prime prover processed 99% of 7,200 consecutive Ethereum mainnet blocks in under 10 seconds each, using a single NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPU. The result meets the Ethereum Foundation’s definition of real-time proving, which is designed around Ethereum’s 12-second slot. Five days earlier, Starknet said it was considering becoming an independent layer-1 chain to target full quantum resistance in 2027.

Why it matters

The announcements represent competing approaches to quantum readiness across Ethereum’s scaling ecosystem. Ethereum’s published target is quantum resistance across execution, consensus and data by December 2029, a schedule the Foundation describes as aggressive. Airbender Prime is an off-consensus prover, not a change to Ethereum’s protocol-level signatures or data commitments.

zkSync’s hash-based STARK system combines GKR sumcheck, WHIR polynomial commitments and BLAKE2s, with Keccak-256 commitments for L1 proofs replacing BN254 pairings. Independent measurements of full-system power use, proof sizes and operating costs remain outstanding. The Foundation’s framework also sets targets for proof size, security, capital spending and power consumption.

Market impact

zkSync is also pursuing regulated finance through Prividium, prioritizing private institutional interoperability and direct Ethereum settlement. Matter Labs says Deutsche Bundesbank is testing Prividium’s open-source permissioning engine. A zkSync-hosted summary describes a network of more than 30 institutions with over $10 trillion in combined assets, while a separate Cari case study cites five founding US regional bank partners with more than $8 trillion in assets. The private-interoperability fee model remains ongoing work, so any connection between Prividium usage and ZK token demand is not yet established.

Starknet’s possible move to L1 remains under consideration and would require governance approval and engineering work.

Frequently asked questions

  1. What real-time proving result did zkSync report?

Matter Labs says Airbender Prime proved 99% of 7,200 consecutive Ethereum mainnet blocks in under 10 seconds each on one NVIDIA RTX PRO 6000 Blackwell GPU.

  2. How do Starknet’s quantum timeline and Ethereum’s target differ?

Starknet is considering an independent L1 targeting full quantum resistance in 2027. Ethereum’s published target covers execution, consensus and data by December 2029.

  3. Does Airbender Prime change Ethereum’s consensus protocol?

No. The prover operates outside Ethereum consensus. Protocol-level signatures and data commitments are separate parts of Ethereum’s quantum-security work.

  4. What is Prividium’s role in zkSync’s institutional strategy?

Matter Labs is prioritizing private institutional interoperability and direct Ethereum settlement through Prividium. The company says Deutsche Bundesbank is testing its open-source permissioning engine.

  5. Is Prividium activity already tied to demand for the ZK token?

The source says the private-interoperability fee model remains ongoing work, so a link between Prividium usage and ZK token demand has not been established.
