Ethereum Classic (ETC) is a Layer 1 blockchain that originated as a forked version of the Ethereum network in 2016, following disagreements over how to respond to the DAO hack. The fork preserved the original, unaltered transaction history, splitting from the chain that would continue as Ethereum. ETC operates on a Proof of Work (PoW) consensus mechanism, the same approach originally used by Ethereum before its transition to Proof of Stake.
