Firo is a privacy-focused cryptocurrency that launched in 2016 under its original name Zcoin. Operating on its own blockchain, it positions itself as private digital cash and has been a notable early adopter of zero-knowledge proof technology in the cryptocurrency space. Over time, Firo has rolled out a progression of privacy protocols, beginning with Zerocoin and moving through Sigma and Lelantus before arriving at its current implementation, Lelantus Spark. Spark conceals the sender, receiver, and transaction amount, and its modular design makes it easier to audit and extend. Through Spark Assets, the network also supports the creation of privacy-preserving tokens within its ecosystem. Firo's hybrid security model pairs Proof-of-Work mining with a masternode layer that uses Long-Living Masternode Quorums. This combination delivers ChainLocks and InstantSend, giving transactions strong finality and added resistance to majority attacks. Dandelion++ further conceals the originating IP address of transactions, reducing reliance on external anonymity tools. A real-world milestone came in 2018, when the Firo blockchain was used to tally votes in a Thai political party leadership election, marking an early large-scale governmental use of blockchain technology.
