Grin (GRIN) is an open-source cryptocurrency built on the Mimblewimble protocol, a lightweight blockchain design first proposed in 2016 under the pseudonym "Tom Elvis Jedusor." The project emphasizes privacy and minimalism as core principles. It launched its mainnet in January 2019 without an ICO, pre-mine, or any form of fundraising, and continues to be developed by a global community of open contributors seeking a fair distribution model. Grin operates without addresses, requiring both sender and recipient to interact online to construct a transaction before it is broadcast. Sender, receiver, and amount data are never recorded on-chain, which significantly reduces blockchain size and helps the network stay lightweight. New nodes can therefore join and sync without downloading a large history of past transactions. The network relies on the Cuckoo Cycle proof-of-work consensus, utilizing two algorithm variants: Cuckoo-29, designed for GPU mining, and Cuckoo-31, intended for ASIC hardware. This dual setup is a deliberate choice to balance accessibility for early miners with long-term efficiency. Grin is classified as a privacy-focused proof-of-work coin within the broader cryptocurrency ecosystem.
