IOTA IOTA Rank #187
IOTA is a distributed ledger platform purpose-built for the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine economies. Rather than relying on a conventional blockchain, it uses a quantum-resistant protocol called the Tangle, a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) structure in which each new transaction confirms two previous ones. This architecture removes the need for miners, eliminates transaction fees, and is designed to scale as adoption grows. Originally focused on feeless microtransactions and secure data transfer between connected devices, IOTA has since expanded into a broader Layer 1 ecosystem. It now supports smart contracts through the IOTA EVM, enabling decentralized finance (DeFi) applications, and incorporates a Proof of Stake mechanism. The project is also positioned within the Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN) space, aiming to coordinate real-world resources and devices. By addressing perceived limitations of traditional blockchains, including throughput bottlenecks, fee structures, and growing chain size, IOTA positions itself as infrastructure for IoT settlements, tokenized assets, and programmable on-chain services.
