ML Mintlayer Rank #2610
Mintlayer (ML) is a layer-2 protocol designed to extend decentralized finance functionality to the Bitcoin blockchain. Operating as a Bitcoin sidechain, it provides an environment for building DeFi applications, smart contracts, atomic swaps, NFTs, and other decentralized applications that interact with Bitcoin's established network and the Lightning Network. The protocol's distinguishing characteristic is its support for direct 1:1 atomic swaps between native Bitcoin and tokenized assets issued on Mintlayer, without requiring intermediaries, wrapped tokens, or federated pegs. This approach allows native Bitcoin to be used in financial instruments while avoiding counterparty risk associated with bridged assets. Mintlayer employs a Proof of Stake consensus mechanism and offers features including Turing-incomplete smart contracts for increased predictability and reduced on-chain congestion, flexible transaction fee payment in any supported token, multi-token transfers within a single transaction, an access control list for security token compliance, and programmable token pools to manage UTXO efficiency. The native ML token functions as the network's utility asset within this ecosystem.
