PIVX is a decentralized, open-source blockchain project that originated as a Proof of Work network in early 2016 before transitioning to a Proof of Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism later that year. Operating without an ICO, instamine, or developer premine, it is governed as a community-driven decentralized autonomous organization (DAO) and runs on a custom-developed PoS engine with its native currency, PIV. A defining characteristic of the network is its focus on user data protection, delivered through SHIELD, a privacy protocol built on zk-SNARKs Sapling and integrated directly into PoS staking. This makes PIVX one of the earlier projects to combine privacy-preserving zero-knowledge cryptography with stake-based validation. The blockchain also employs a masternode layer that provides decentralized governance through voting, with ongoing development around deterministic masternode lists and long-living masternode quorums. PIVX functions as an application- and payment-agnostic network where PIV is used for private transactions, staking, and securing the protocol. Its coin supply combines a fixed block emission with monthly budget allocations, while transaction fees are burned to provide dynamic supply calibration.
