Syscoin (SYS) is a modular blockchain network launched in 2014 as a fork of Bitcoin, designed to combine the security of Bitcoin's Proof of Work (PoW) consensus with Ethereum-compatible smart contract capability. Rather than operating as a single chain, Syscoin is structured as a full-stack ecosystem with a layered architecture. Its Layer 1 consists of two coexisting chains: a UTXO-based chain that anchors security through merged mining with Bitcoin, and an EVM-compatible chain that supports smart contract execution. This dual-chain approach allows the network to benefit from Bitcoin-grade security while offering the programmability expected of modern smart contract platforms. On top of this base layer, Syscoin operates Rollux, an EVM-equivalent Layer 2 rollup built on the OP Stack. Rollux is distinguished as an L2 secured through Bitcoin merged mining and employs Proof of Data Availability (PoDA) to keep transaction data verifiable. The network also incorporates additional Layer 2 features such as Z-DAG for faster settlement and a bridge for cross-chain interoperability. Beyond rollups, Syscoin's roadmap includes exploration of zero-knowledge technologies and decentralized identifier (DID) infrastructure, positioning it as a modular, multi-layer platform aimed at scalable Web3 applications.
