Vara Network is a standalone smart contract platform built on Substrate, the framework developed for the Polkadot ecosystem. It operates as the first independent network based on the Gear Protocol, designed to support the creation and deployment of decentralized applications through a developer environment intended to feel familiar to those accustomed to traditional Web 2.0 workflows. The platform is distinguished by three core technical foundations. The actor model and persistent memory are architectural primitives drawn from large-scale computing and microservices design, supporting parallel execution and asynchronous programming. WebAssembly (Wasm) serves as the underlying virtual machine, enabling programs compiled to Wasm to run efficiently across modern browsers and execution environments, with the protocol positioning this approach as faster than conventional virtual machines. Vara was created by Nikolay Volf, a former core Polkadot developer, who began building the network in 2021. The project received early funding through a pre-seed round in the second quarter of that year, after which development continued around its Wasm-native architecture and smart contract capabilities. As a Layer 1, Vara focuses on serving as a hub for protocols that rely on parallel execution and asynchronous messaging to deliver decentralized products.
