Verus (VRSC) is a Layer 1 blockchain and smart contract platform that emphasizes privacy, decentralization, and resistance to common consensus-level attacks. Built around a hybrid consensus mechanism called Proof of Power, the network combines 50% proof of work and 50% proof of stake to address theoretical weaknesses in pure proof-of-stake systems, including the "nothing at stake" problem, and to provide protection against 51% hash attacks. The protocol integrates zero-knowledge Sapling-based privacy features, allowing shielded transactions without sacrificing throughput, and is paired with VerusHash, a hash algorithm designed to be roughly equally efficient on CPUs and GPUs, discouraging the concentration of mining power on specialized hardware. Verus also incorporates MEV protection and enables interchain smart contracts, supporting programmable interactions across connected chains. A defining aspect of the project's roadmap is the automated provisioning of public blockchains as a service, using the same cryptographic mechanisms that underpin its consensus. The initial envisioned applications for this feature include polls and elections, where verifiable and censorship-resistant infrastructure is critical. VRSC was launched with no ICO and no premine, positioning the network as a community-driven project from inception.
