Andrej Karpathy, one of the most recognisable names in modern AI research and a co-founder of OpenAI, has joined Anthropic. Karpathy confirmed the move himself on X, writing: "I've joined Anthropic. I think the next few years at the frontier of LLMs will be especially formative."
Karpathy added that he is "very excited to get back to R&D" and signalled he intends to eventually resume his widely followed work in AI education. His move to Anthropic — the Claude-maker backed by Amazon and Google — is one of the most significant talent shifts the frontier AI space has seen in recent memory.
For Anthropic, landing a researcher of Karpathy's calibre and public profile is a meaningful signal of the company's growing pull at the frontier. For the broader LLM race, it underscores how fluid the talent landscape remains even as the major labs consolidate resources.
