Secret Network's Axelar bridge drained for $4.67M in exploit
Encrypted balances hid the shortfall for a week — the real cost is the absent monitoring layer and a $770K recovery window Axelar has declined to act on.
Axelar is a proof-of-stake blockchain focused on interoperability, designed to enable secure cross-chain communication across a broad range of networks. It functions as an infrastructure layer that connects disparate blockchain ecosystems, allowing decentralized applications and their users to move assets and transmit messages between chains through a unified interface, often compared to a payments-style API for Web3. The network is operated by validators who produce blocks, participate in multi-party signing of cross-chain transactions, and vote on the state of external chains. AXL is the native token that powers this system. It serves two primary functions: paying network transaction fees to validators and supporting on-chain governance over the protocol. Tokenholders can also stake AXL by delegating to validators and earn staking rewards, minus commission. A key usability feature is that end users do not need to hold AXL to interact with Axelar-powered applications, as gas and conversions are handled automatically on the back end. Rewards are inflationary by design, though fee mechanics create a pathway for the supply to become deflationary under sustained network activity.
