Chromia is an open-source public blockchain developed by the Swedish company Chromaway AB, whose origins lie in an enterprise-grade solution called Postchain. The network's native asset, CHR, launched in May 2019. It operates as a standalone Layer-1 blockchain while also functioning as an EVM-compatible Layer-2 extension for BNB Chain and Ethereum. The platform is built around a relational blockchain architecture and a custom programming language called Rell, which mirrors the structure of SQL. This design allows developers to combine the security and immutability of blockchain with the efficient data handling of a relational database. Each decentralized application on Chromia runs on its own sidechain anchored to the main network, giving projects independent scalability and flexible fee models. Some applications require users to pay transaction fees in CHR, while others stake CHR to reserve computational capacity and offer users free transactions. Chromia supports a range of use cases across decentralized finance, gaming, NFTs, and real-world asset tokenization, with projects including the DeFi options platform Hedget, the open-world farming game My Neighbor Alice, and government land registry initiatives. Its modular design positions it as infrastructure for next-generation decentralized applications requiring enhanced data management.
