IOTA is a distributed ledger platform purpose-built for the Internet of Things (IoT) and machine-to-machine economies. Rather than relying on a conventional blockchain, it uses a quantum-resistant protocol called the Tangle, a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG) structure in which each new transaction confirms two previous ones. This architecture removes the need for miners, eliminates transaction fees, and is designed to scale as adoption grows. Originally focused on feeless microtransactions and secure data transfer between connected devices, IOTA has since expanded into a broader Layer 1 ecosystem.
