Terra Luna Classic (LUNC) is the native reserve asset of the original Terra blockchain, a public smart contract platform designed to build a decentralized financial payment network that recreates traditional payment infrastructure on-chain. Following the May 2022 collapse of the Terra ecosystem and the subsequent creation of a new chain, the original network continued operating under the "Terra Classic" designation, with LUNC remaining its base token. LUNC is built using the Cosmos SDK and operates on a Tendermint-based proof-of-stake consensus mechanism. The token historically served three core roles: securing the network by staking alongside Terra-pegged stablecoins to validate transactions, absorbing volatility to maintain the price stability of those algorithmic stablecoins, and rewarding validators who produce blocks. After the original algorithmic stablecoin model was discontinued, LUNC's staking and governance functions continued on the surviving classic chain.
