Ontology (ONT) is a high-performance public blockchain and distributed trust collaboration platform designed to support a variety of decentralized applications. The project provides a full framework of distributed ledgers and smart contract systems, allowing different public blockchains to be customized for specific use cases. It also enables cross-chain collaboration through a set of standardized protocol groups. Built on a Proof of Stake consensus model that incorporates masternodes, Ontology supplies common infrastructure modules for scenarios such as distributed digital identity and decentralized data exchange, aiming to give developers ready-made building blocks for trust-based applications. Rather than functioning as a single standalone chain, the framework allows businesses to deploy both private and public blockchains, with transactions confirmed in a decentralized environment so that no single party can exert control over the network. Ontology was launched in 2017 by OnChain, a Chinese blockchain firm whose founders, Erik Zhang and Da HongFei, were also behind the NEO blockchain. The platform is positioned as a smart contract ecosystem with a focus on enterprise integration, enabling organizations of varying sizes to adopt blockchain technology without overhauling their existing systems.
