Status (SNT) is the native utility token of Status, a mobile operating system built as a gateway to the Ethereum network. The project combines a decentralized browser, a private messenger, and a crypto wallet into a single smartphone application available on both Android and iOS, allowing users to access Ethereum-based decentralized applications (dapps) directly from their phones. Within the Status ecosystem, users can send, receive, and store Ether and other Ethereum-based assets, communicate privately, and discover nearby users for local exchange of currencies, services, or ideas. The concept was first introduced in September 2016 at DevCon2 by co-founders Carl Bennetts and Jarrad Hope, who presented their vision for an Ethereum light client aimed at everyday smartphone users. Positioned within the Ethereum ecosystem, Status is often categorized as infrastructure for decentralized applications with a strong emphasis on privacy and user sovereignty, functioning as a Layer 2-style access layer that simplifies interaction with the underlying network while keeping keys and communications under the user's control.
