Bitwise CIO: Stablecoin Supply Could Hit $4T by 2030

Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan said pilots of stablecoin-based payouts by tech platforms including DoorDash and Meta could help drive dollar-pegged supply to $4 trillion by 2030, up from roughly $302 billion today. DoorDash is partnering with Stripe to test stablecoin payouts to its 10 million Dashers across more than 40 countries, while Meta is rolling out similar programs for creators in the Philippines and Colombia using the Solana and Polygon blockchains, with Hougan citing a global creator economy of about 200 million contributors.

Why it matters

Hougan framed the dollar amounts in these pilots as small and the near-term market impact as marginal, but argued the structural signal is what matters: large platforms are treating stablecoins as core payout infrastructure, not a crypto-native experiment. The primary advantage, in his view, is not cost — stablecoins already settle for cents versus tens of dollars for a bank wire — but simplicity: one wallet address, no banking rails, and no currency conversion for global businesses handling millions of micropayments.

Market impact

The backdrop puts the projection in context. Total stablecoin supply sits above $302 billion, with Tether's USDT at about $189.5 billion and Circle's USDC near $79 billion, meaning a $4 trillion outcome would represent a roughly 13x expansion in four years. Western Union launched its USDPT stablecoin on Solana on Monday for 24/7 settlement across more than 200 countries, and Visa said its stablecoin settlement pilot has reached a $7 billion annualized run rate across nine blockchains and more than 130 card programs. Hougan wrote that he expects every global tech company with distributed gig workers to follow DoorDash and Meta, pulling millions of new users into the crypto ecosystem in the process.
