BitMine Nears Its 5% ETH Ceiling as Buying Slows

At its latest disclosed buying pace, BitMine could reach the cap in about six weeks, shifting the focus from market purchases to staking income and reward management.

BitMine held 6,016,414 ETH as of Oct. 4, about 4.9% of the 122.1 million ETH supply used in its calculations. Chairman Tom Lee said the company will stop accumulating once its holdings reach 5%, a threshold he said was about 100,000 ETH away. Based on the disclosed holdings and supply figure, the gap is closer to 88,586 ETH.

Why it matters

BitMine’s latest disclosed purchase was 15,112 ETH in the week through Oct. 4. At that pace, it would take about 5.9 weeks to close the gap, putting the ceiling within reach around mid-November. Buying 20,000 ETH a week would shorten the estimate to about 4.4 weeks; 10,000 a week would extend it to about 8.9 weeks. These are scenarios, not company guidance, and changes in Ethereum’s supply could shift the number of tokens represented by 5%.

Lookonchain reported that BitMine appeared to acquire another 12,500 ETH through BitGo on Oct. 7, but the purchase was not included in the company’s official holdings update. If confirmed, it would reduce the remaining gap to about 76,086 ETH.

Market impact

Reaching the cap would constrain BitMine’s market accumulation and make staking a more prominent source of treasury growth. As of Oct. 4, the company had about 5.07 million ETH staked, roughly 84% of its holdings. BitMine estimated that position could generate about $363 million in annualized revenue, and projected about $431 million if it staked its entire ETH balance, using a 2.63% annualized yield.

Staking rewards could complicate the 5% limit by adding ETH to the treasury even after purchases stop. BitMine has not fully established how it would manage rewards that push holdings toward or above the ceiling. Its options could include limiting purchases, changing how it handles rewards, or selling ETH. The threshold also moves with Ethereum’s total supply.
