Circle added its Bitcoin-backed cirBTC token to Gateway, allowing holders to use one deposited balance across Ethereum and Arc. Gateway treats deposits on supported networks as a single spendable balance for each asset, while Circle advertises cross-chain access in under 500 milliseconds after deposit finality. Ethereum deposits typically take about 13 to 19 minutes before Gateway updates the balance or issues an attestation.
Why it matters
The integration targets exchanges, wallets and other services that need liquidity available on more than one chain. A cirBTC transfer burns the token on the source network and mints it on the destination, so the process moves the token representation rather than converting it into USDC or transferring native Bitcoin.
Circle says cirBTC is backed one-for-one by native Bitcoin held at a regulated entity in its corporate group, with the BTC segregated from corporate assets for holders. Gateway access is permissionless, while minting and redeeming cirBTC through Circle Mint requires qualified-business access.
Market impact
The shared balance can reduce the need to maintain separate cirBTC inventories on Ethereum and Arc. Circle also added EURC to Gateway, with launch fees waived on Arc for cirBTC and EURC and a quoted one-basis-point rate outside Arc. Gas and optional forwarding charges remain separate, and transfer costs are paid in cirBTC.
The fast route has important limits. A separate API-independent withdrawal path lets users reclaim funds from the Gateway Wallet contract after seven days, including for cirBTC. That is a fallback exit, not the normal transfer time between Ethereum and Arc, and redemption into native Bitcoin still runs through Circle Mint.
Frequently asked questions
-
What does Gateway change for cirBTC holders?
Gateway lets holders use one deposited cirBTC balance across Ethereum and Arc instead of maintaining separate balances on both networks.
-
How does a cirBTC transfer move between Ethereum and Arc?
Gateway burns cirBTC on the source network and mints cirBTC on the destination. It does not convert cirBTC into USDC or transfer native Bitcoin.
-
How fast is the cirBTC cross-chain process?
Circle advertises access in under 500 milliseconds after deposit finality. Ethereum deposits typically take about 13 to 19 minutes before Gateway updates the balance or issues an attestation.
-
Who can mint or redeem cirBTC through Circle Mint?
Gateway access is permissionless, but minting and redeeming cirBTC for native Bitcoin through Circle Mint requires qualified-business access.
-
How long does the API-independent cirBTC withdrawal take?
The fallback withdrawal route from the Gateway Wallet contract takes seven days. It is separate from the ordinary cross-chain transfer process between Ethereum and Arc.
