Deutsche Bank plans to bring a regulated digital asset custody service live for European institutional and corporate clients by the end of 2026, subject to the completion of applicable regulatory checks. At debut, the service will support a select range of assets including bitcoin, ether and the USDC and EURC stablecoins.

Gerald Podobnik, the bank's co-head of corporate bank, framed the move as infrastructure rather than a bet: "Digital assets are not a replacement for the traditional financial system but an important complement to it. We see them as new rails that coexist with existing marketing infrastructures." He added the service will be developed in line with client demand, regulatory requirements and the bank's risk appetite.

Why it matters

This is a major TradFi institution converting years of preparation into a live product. Deutsche Bank was reported last July to be building the custody service alongside exchange Bitpanda, and the launch puts Germany's largest bank in direct competition with Standard Chartered and BBVA, which already offer regulated custody to European clients.

The message for the market is straightforward: as institutions and corporates adopt digital assets, they will likely gravitate toward custody services offered by banks they already rely on for their traditional portfolios. Every major European lender that adds regulated custody narrows the gap between crypto-native and traditional financial infrastructure.

Market impact

For bitcoin and ether, another Tier 1 custody counterparty deepens the institutional plumbing that spot ETFs and corporate treasuries depend on. The inclusion of USDC and EURC at debut is equally notable, signalling that Deutsche Bank views regulated stablecoins as core settlement assets rather than speculative tokens.

The open question is pace. Client demand and European regulatory sign-off will shape how quickly the service scales beyond the initial asset list, and rivals with existing custody books hold a head start.
