A Japanese court approved moving Mt. Gox’s creditor repayment deadline from Oct. 31, 2026, to Oct. 31, 2027, trustee Nobuaki Kobayashi said in an Oct. 16 notice. The extension covers Base Repayment, Early Lump-Sum Repayment and Intermediate Repayment claims.
The postponement is the fourth consecutive annual delay since the trustee initially targeted October 2023. Many creditors remain unpaid because they have not completed required procedures, while others face problems with claim processing, exchange acceptance, account verification or security checks.
Mt. Gox began distributing Bitcoin and Bitcoin Cash through designated exchanges including Kraken and Bitstamp in July 2024. More than 19,500 creditors had received the assets by March 2025, but the latest notice provided no timetable for individual distributions or updated count of affected claimants.
The recovery process dates back to the exchange’s February 2014 collapse, when it reported the loss of approximately 850,000 Bitcoin. Some eligible creditors receive cryptocurrency directly, while others receive cash proceeds from asset sales, leaving future distributions and their timing uncertain.
