Nscale’s planned Essex AI data center will not supply Microsoft’s Azure cloud after UK Power Networks said enough grid capacity may not be available until the early-to-mid 2030s. The Nvidia-backed company had planned to install 23,040 Nvidia chips at the Loughton site and deliver 50 megawatts of computing capacity by early 2027.
Nscale announced the project last year with Microsoft, Nvidia and OpenAI. The company has since cleared the site and is exploring alternative ways to bring in power, while saying its other Microsoft contracts remain in place. The setback highlights a central constraint in the migration of bitcoin miners into AI infrastructure: securing electricity is proving as difficult as securing customers and financing.
Why it matters
Nscale grew out of Arkon Energy, a bitcoin-mining infrastructure company, and used its experience securing land and power to pursue AI computing contracts. The strategy has spread across the listed mining sector as operators seek steadier revenue than bitcoin mining can provide.
Public miners had announced more than $70 billion in AI and high-performance computing contracts, while cutting combined bitcoin holdings by more than 15,000 BTC from peak levels partly to fund construction. But the projects require far more capital. AI-ready facilities cost an estimated $8 million to $15 million per megawatt, compared with roughly $700,000 to $1 million for bitcoin mining.
Market impact
The revenue conversion gap is widening. CoinShares counted more than 4 gigawatts of AI capacity under contract across tracked miners, but only about 550 megawatts was actually billing customers. Contract backlogs exceeded $100 billion, while annualized AI revenue stood at just over $1 billion.
Britain’s data center connection queue adds another hurdle. Ofgem says proposed projects represent about 73 gigawatts of demand and is considering tougher rules for applicants that may never build. Unless Nscale secures its own power or the grid connection moves much faster, the cleared Essex site could remain idle for years.
Frequently asked questions
-
Why did Microsoft abandon Nscale’s planned Essex AI data center?
UK Power Networks said sufficient grid capacity may not be available until the early-to-mid 2030s, far beyond the project’s planned early 2027 delivery date.
-
How large was Nscale’s planned Microsoft AI facility?
The site was planned to house 23,040 Nvidia chips and provide 50 megawatts of computing capacity to Microsoft’s Azure cloud.
-
What does the setback show about bitcoin miners moving into AI?
The transition requires land, grid power, capital and customers to arrive together. Delays in any one of those areas can leave announced facilities idle.
-
How do AI data center costs compare with bitcoin mining facilities?
AI-ready facilities are estimated to cost $8 million to $15 million per megawatt, compared with roughly $700,000 to $1 million for bitcoin mining.
-
How much AI capacity is actually generating revenue for tracked miners?
More than 4 gigawatts was under contract across miners tracked by CoinShares, but only about 550 megawatts was billing customers.
