Optimism Approves Upgrade 20 for Superchain Interoperability

The fault-proof redesign creates the timestamp-based foundation for a future multi-chain dispute system, while a seven-day testnet soak stands between approval and mainnet execution.

Optimism governance completed its vote on Sept. 16, approving Upgrade 20 and moving the Superchain toward the fault-proof architecture required for future interoperability. OP Sepolia, Ink Sepolia, Soneium Minato and Unichain Sepolia are targeted for a Sept. 17 contract upgrade, with mainnet execution scheduled for Sept. 24 if the system completes a healthy seven-day testnet soak.

The upgrade replaces Output Root Dispute Games with Super Root Dispute Games. Existing games anchor claims to an L2 block number, while Super Root games use timestamps, creating a shared time reference that can eventually represent multiple chains in one dispute system. Interoperability is not live yet, and each new game will still contain the Output Root of a single chain during this transition.

Why it matters

Optimism is changing the dispute layer before cross-chain interoperability launches, rather than modifying the security system after multiple chains are connected. The release also updates the contracts manager and SystemConfig, adding upgrade-sequencing safeguards and removing legacy configuration functions identified during Upgrade 19.

Permissioned chains move to game type 5, while permissionless fault-proof deployments use game type 9. Operators running op-challenger, op-dispute-mon and op-proposer must update their infrastructure around the L1 contract cutover. Withdrawal applications that inspect dispute games directly must also recognize the new structure, with viem/op-stack users needing version 2.51.0 or later.

Market impact

Ordinary users do not need to act. Existing withdrawal proofs remain valid, and OptimismPortal continues to accept both dispute-game formats. OP nodes that only follow the chain also need no new activation configuration.

The immediate market signal is infrastructure readiness rather than a live interoperability launch. A clean seven-day testnet run would clear the way for the Sept. 24 mainnet execution, moving OP Mainnet and participating chains onto the dispute format Optimism expects to use when Superchain interoperability reaches production.

Frequently asked questions

  1. What did Optimism approve in Upgrade 20?

Optimism approved a transition from Output Root Dispute Games to Super Root Dispute Games, moving its fault-proof system toward the architecture required for future Superchain interoperability.

  2. When could Optimism execute Upgrade 20 on mainnet?

Mainnet execution is scheduled for Sept. 24 if the upgraded system completes a healthy seven-day testnet soak.

  3. How do Super Root Dispute Games differ from existing games?

Existing games anchor claims to an L2 block number. Super Root games use timestamps, creating a shared time reference that can eventually support disputes involving multiple chains.

  4. Will Upgrade 20 make Superchain interoperability live immediately?

No. Upgrade 20 is described as a prerequisite for interoperability, but each dispute game remains tied to a single chain during this transition.

  5. Do ordinary Optimism users need to take action?

No. Previously submitted withdrawal proofs remain valid, and OptimismPortal continues to accept both dispute-game formats. Infrastructure operators and some withdrawal applications must handle the new system.
