Russia's largest bank, Sberbank, has secured approval from the Bank of Russia to exchange cryptocurrencies and plans to open trading to all clients on Dec. 1. The central bank added Sberbank to its register of cryptocurrency exchange providers, according to Interfax, stacking it on top of the digital depository listing the bank won earlier this month. Sberbank is already testing BTC, ETH and USDT trades in its own app, though the central bank will set the final list of permitted coins.
Why it matters
The approval marks another step away from the central bank's 2022 proposal to ban domestic crypto exchanges outright. A law that took effect Sept. 1 instead creates a regulated market spanning banks, brokers, exchanges and digital depositories, and nine organizations now sit on the exchange register, including VTB and T-Invest Lab.
The two registrations cover complementary roles. Registered dealers can buy and sell crypto with their own funds outside organized exchanges, while depositories record ownership and transfers. Combined with the crypto wallet Sberbank started building earlier this year, they give the bank a route to offer trading and custody-related services side by side.
Market impact
The opening is real but comes with strings attached. Domestic crypto payments remain prohibited, and from July 2027 all crypto transactions must route through registered intermediaries, a rule that would effectively shut out peer-to-peer trades settled through Russian bank accounts.
Sberbank plans to debut its first products Dec. 1 through interfaces its customers already use. If live BTC, ETH and USDT trading reaches the app of Russia's largest retail bank, it puts regulated crypto access in front of tens of millions of clients overnight, a legitimization signal most large economies have only debated. The next markers to watch are the central bank's final permitted-coin list and whether VTB moves just as fast.
