The UK Financial Conduct Authority has opened its authorization gateway for crypto companies seeking to operate in the country. Firms have until the end of February 2027 to apply, ahead of the new regulatory framework’s planned introduction in October 2027.
Why it matters
The application window gives firms five months to prepare for a regime years in the making. Legislative work began in 2022, while the EU’s Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation came into force in June 2023. The UK has now set out a licensing timetable for crypto businesses seeking to operate under its framework.
More than 60 companies already registered under the FCA’s existing anti-money-laundering regime may have a head start on the new requirements. That registration focused primarily on AML, so it is not the same as authorization under the incoming framework.
Market impact
The deadline creates a near-term compliance task for firms that want to continue operating in the UK under the new rules. Companies must assess the requirements and prepare their applications within the five-month window.
Zumo, an Edinburgh-based crypto infrastructure platform registered with the FCA in 2021, has created a UK Cryptoasset Regulation Tracker to map obligations to regulated activities and track regulatory milestones. Founder and CEO Nick Jones said the team built it by reviewing individual obligations and updating the mapping as further papers are published.
The framework is planned to take effect in October 2027. The application window and the readiness of existing registrants will be key milestones as the UK moves toward formal supervision of crypto firms.
