Utexo, a Tether-backed Bitcoin payments infrastructure project, plans to issue USDT on the Bitcoin network this month. Co-founder Viktor Ihnatiuk said the company has obtained a commercial license and will provide APIs, SDKs and cloud infrastructure for exchanges, wallets and payment providers.

Why it matters

USDT first launched on Bitcoin through the Omni layer in 2014, but Ethereum and Tron have since carried nearly all of the stablecoin's roughly $190 billion supply. Utexo, built on RGB and Bitcoin's UTXO model, brings the largest stablecoin back to its original settlement network with a modern design: private USDT transfers, native BTC-USDT swaps and BTC-backed lending, all without wrapping Bitcoin.

The RGB approach keeps most transaction data off Bitcoin's public ledger, addressing the throughput and privacy constraints that pushed stablecoin activity onto other chains in the first place.

Market impact

Native USDT on Bitcoin opens a payments lane independent of Ethereum gas or Tron's rails, and direct BTC-USDT swaps could deepen liquidity at the base layer. Utexo also plans to extend USDT support to the Lightning Network after the Bitcoin launch, which would put a $190 billion stablecoin on Bitcoin's fastest payment rails.

Adoption pace among exchanges, wallets and payment providers once the APIs and SDKs ship will determine whether USDT on Bitcoin becomes a genuine settlement layer.
