Banca Sella has completed the formal notification process with the Bank of Italy, clearing the regulatory path to become the first Italian bank authorised to offer crypto-related services. The bank plans to launch digital asset custody and transfer services for selected clients before the end of 2026.
The move is not a sudden pivot — Banca Sella has been embedded in Italy's fintech regulatory sandbox since 2022 as a participant in the Bank of Italy's Fintech Milano Hub pilot. That groundwork appears to have smoothed the notification process and positioned the bank ahead of its domestic peers.
Banca Sella is also a founding member of Qivalis, a consortium of 37 European banks working to launch a euro-pegged stablecoin.
